In plain words — you do not need to know what is wrong.

Ask us to measure it before you ask us to quote it
Most people approach a workshop asking for a price. On engine work that is the wrong opening move — the price is a consequence of measurements nobody has taken yet.
Whether your crankshaft can be ground rather than replaced is not a matter of opinion. It turns on ovality, hardness, bend, crack depth, and how much material is left above the lowest undersize that bearing shells are actually made in. Every one of those is a number, and every one can be taken in a morning. Until they have been, “repair it” and “replace it” are both guesses — including ours.

How a job is assessed and approved
The method does not change with the size of the job.
- You tell us what is happeningCall, WhatsApp, email or the form.
- We tell you what we need to seeThe component, a site visit — or a check you can do yourself for nothing. A fair number of enquiries end here, and that is a good outcome.
- The part is cleaned and inspectedNothing is measured dirty. Magnetic particle inspection on steel and cast iron; dye penetrant where the geometry suits it better.
- It is measured, and the readings written downAgainst the engine manufacturer's service limits.
- You get a scope and quotation in writingThe operations, the parts, and where relevant the replacement cost beside the repair cost — so you decide on numbers, not on our advice.
- You approveNothing is cut and no part is ordered on your account before you agree the scope and the figure.
- If the job changes, you get a phone call firstA crack test that alters the scope, a bore at its last oversize — you hear it as it is found, and the machine stops until you decide.
- The work is carried out and verifiedThe same measurements, on the same instruments, after machining as before.
- It is tested where testing appliesA bench test on injection equipment, a run on an engine, a load test on a genset where the job justifies it.
- It is returned with its recordThe measurement sheet travels with the part.

Why we publish no prices
What the number actually turns on
The same symptom can have a cheap cause or an expensive one. Any workshop that quotes an engine job over the phone before seeing it is guessing — and the guess is almost always low, because a low guess wins the job and the difference gets found later.
A journal already at its last undersize, a head surfaced past the point where valve depth still works, a block cracked through a main web — those get an honest “replace it”, in writing, with the measurements that led to it. That advice costs us the occasional job and keeps the customer.
